Painting Updates

Last update was a while ago but the last few months I've mostly been working on a mix of Guild Ball and Malifaux.  Having great fun painting these guys, with the death of WFB it knocked my desire to paint anything for that system so focus has definitely been elsewhere, but once all the 'faux and Guild Ball is complete I'll probably pull some back out.

NY resolutions - 6m update

Ok so we're now half way through the year. After a blistering start (see my Q1 Resolution Achievements) Q2 has been far slower but still productive.

My main focus has been Guild Ball for the last couple of months and I've built all 5 teams I kickstarted and painted my Butchers and Union and started on the Alchemists. So that takes me beyond my resolution goal of all built and 1 team painted.  I've now decided to sell the Morticians, not that I don't like them but I've got too many teams that I'll not get round to playing in the near future and I had a mate who wanted into the game with them so it just made sense.  Fishermen might also follow as Alchemists are likely to be my 'speed' team.

With the changes to Warhammer Fantasy, which has been a mess of rumours for months and finally is coming out as a vastly changed game, I've basically ditched those resolutions but do think I'll still paint a bunch of those models at some point as I'm sure they'll have a use but waiting till I know a bit about the army organisation in the new game before I commit to anything.  So clock that resolution up as a FAIL already but mitigating circumstances.

That leaves me with Malifaux as my biggest outstanding resolution. I've got everything bar a couple of Lynch's lot (need stripped) built and undercoated so I've been pulling some out and slapping on paint to get me going with them.  As ever I really enjoy painting these models when I get the chance but as I'm not really playing the game just now it's not been a high priority for me.

Malifaux has taken a back seat again so I've not had the same motivation to paint it, I think it might be because I'm not that fussed about the remaining crews (Lynch & Hoffman). The robots are easy to paint in the scheme is come up with so they've been a great starting place. I've also got a few mercs to fit into existing crews that I'll get going on too.

So hopefully I can get focussed on finishing up this lot and that'll be me there with resolutions bar the WFB stuff.

I might have to revisit my resolutions given the changes to my gaming.  There have been a few changes over the year as I've moved from being a very heavy WFB player through to May to not playing a single game since.  As a result I'm looking more to other games.  Sat in my cupboard I've got Warmachine (mercs), Necromunda (Van Saar), Relic Knights (Doctorine & Noh), Infinity (Adrianna) and I've backed the most recent Darkland Kickstarter (Picts & Irish) which can probably double up as Saga too.  So clearly I'm branching out hard.

I look at the new Warhammer: Age of Sigmar game and have some reservations, the rules look fine to me in general terms but it's the issue I have of potentially large model count but a skirmish movement game that puts me off.  Probably the nearest comparator I've watched played is Warmachine where some forces get up towards the 100 model mark of infantry and it just looks like a big scrum in the middle of the board and I don't really enjoy that visually or necessarily think I'm a fan of the tactical challenge.  I see it is very tactical/strategical still (both WM and AoS I'm covering with this) but it's a change of the tactics into a style I'm less interested in.  But I've not played AoS yet so will definitely give it a fair chance and I'm not giving it in yet, but I think I want to wait until a bit more has been released to properly understand where the game is going.

Guildball experiences - Union

Union - Artwork

Having now played a couple of games of Guildball with union I'm now starting to find roles for my players and understand a bit about how the game flows.

Current Roster

  • Blackheart,
  • coin,
  • mist,
  • gutter,
  • hemlock
  • fangtooth/rage (swapped between them).

Union Overview

Union has plenty of options I've still not tried out so they could could play out a bit differently but the line up I'm using is getting me used to the team. Some overall things I've noticed:
  1. Union generate momentum with ease, apart from Blackheart it seems pretty much every hit I do generates momentum!
  2. Union feels like a beater team but with the right setup most players are reasonable kickers so you can move the ball relatively easily when you want so can play an all round game.
  3. 2" melee range on most models is really useful for typing down opponents and clogging up the field forcing them to waste their movement or take parting blows.
  4. Limited shooting range but moderate kick dice on most players means you can move the ball about relatively easily but can't get the ridiculously long range scoring potential of some teams.

Union Renders

Player by Player

Blackheart - is a striker. Dodge at start of activation, Playbook full of dodges, Good movement. Only thing he lacks is a good kick range.

Coin - pick a player that wants an influence, that you will activate later in the turn, stand inside 4 but don't bother putting influence on him. I was usually using it for hemlocke or gutter. Dunno how this compares to other mascots impact on the game but I used for activation management more than anything else.

Gutter - is going to be my crutch. Seriously! She has good damage output, ability to heal by hitting you, Chain pull to isolate players to beat senseless and AoE damage ability if she does end up in a crowd. All whilst being fast and a capable ball handler.

Rage - needs to be dealt with but he will go down if targeted. My opponent left him alone and he went on a wrecking mission through the middle of his crew. Damage output is amazing and most of the time I was forgetting bleed! Preferred him over Fangtooth as only ever using 1 influence means the rest of the team has plenty to go round.

Mist - isn't a striker. Instead I used him (I still think should be a she) as a sweeper. Load up with influence and move in tackle, dodge out and pass off is easy to achieve in a single activation with 4 inf.

Hemlocke - I've found tended to just sit behind the beaters and be a nuisance. The damage & poison AoE has enough range to be really annoying. That ability to heal/remove conditions is incredibly useful too, though you generate enough momentum usually that it isn't entirely necessary. Her Playbook is all momentum too. I'm realising with def 6 I can actually just put her out front too and not really worry so can be a nuisance piece.  Wonder if she might be a stealth striker, lacks dodges or other move tricks but with blind and def 6 can get away from people pretty easily without too much worry of a high hit total so not that fussed by parting strikes.

Team selection thoughts

I do wonder about dropping hemlocke for someone else but I think I'd be struggling for enough influence to go round. And the player coming in would be running about more so I'd be putting coin in more vulnerable spots as a result, or possibly just hang out with gutter.

Influence allocation is important for team selection. Obviously it's situationally dependant but I was usually loading gutter and mist early on, always one in rage, Hemlocke gets one and another from coin to get the AoE out there, remainder in Blackheart.

Look to get Blackheart gets into a scoring position at end of turn to activate first and score the next turn. you want enough influence to generate momentum, dodge out and shoot. Which I was generally finding needed 3 influence as his playbook isn't momentum heavy on useful results so slightly trickier to achieve than other players.

Tactics

Early game hold gutter and rage to late in the turn try to get some momentum for gutter to chain pull an opponent out into isolated position and in rage charge range. Those two can potentially one turn take down most players. Even if they don't you generate so much momentum it sets you up for first next turn.

Use 2" melee to tie up as many people as possible allowing isolation of ball carrier, mist the strips the ball and sends it downfield, whether to space or Blackheart doesn't overly matter! He can then use his dodge ability to get free for a scoring attempt.

Activation order - hugely dependant on ball position. If opponent has a threat on goal activation changes. Also depends on whether rage is in combat or charge range. Want to get that charge off whenever possible to generate 4 attacks from 1 inf.

Overall I'm loving how the team plays. Synergy is in how you use the players and not what is on their cards and I really like that, there isn't the obvious A buffs B, B then does X going on every turn. It also means each player can work in isolation as required and not become inefficient.

March painted

So at the start of March I set out the following paint queue:

WFB

10 Bret Peasant Bowmen – 10 Painted

10 Mounted Yeoman

HE Noble on eagle

Malifaux

1 Outcast Johan

2 Outcast Hollow Waifs

Relic Knights

3 Doctorine Acedemy Guard

1 Doctorine Delphine & Ekis

1 Doctorine Librarian

1 Doctorine Fiametta

WFB

That was having got all jazzed from playing in a couple of 1 day events.  Well I say that, the Brets are there to get done for a tourney in April so were always going to bump towards the front of the queue.

So I’ve gotten there with the Brets, list submitted ended up not using the Yeomen but they’re getting taken to an event in May so it’s not wasted, as using Fireforge models I’ve ended up doing 12 of them too as that’s how many come in a box.

Malifaux

I got basecoats down on the waifs but they’ve stalled, dunno why but I just cant bring myself to finish them off despite quite liking the models, I’m sure the mood will take me soon enough.  Johan was a pleasure to paint though.  Lovely flesh, a wonderful flowing cloak just screaming out for a load of work in blending/layering, but still not quite got round to finishing the details on him, just need to add eyes, a tiny amount more definition to the flesh and the base.

Relic Knights

These guys have been awesome fun to paint, a bright vibrant colour scheme that looks different to most other things I’ve painted for years.  Happily ticked off my new years resolution too of getting 50pts painted.  I actually enjoyed it so much I bought another faction for the game which was being sold off by someone I know!  Admittedly I did pick out most of the bigger cooler figures but about half the 30mm based stuff doesn’t look bad to paint either, sadly the prefects unit looks like it will just be a pain, so will likely languish in a box for a while.

April Painting target

At the time of writing Guild Ball has confirmed that shipping is to commence today so I’ll hopefully have some shiny new models to paint up for that.  If they come in time I’m very tempted to try and get them done for a trial game in the evenings at the when at the WFB tourney I mentioned above.  Also I’d like to try and see if I can get a painted team before the shipping reaches the US as a challenge mentioned on twitter when talking to a podcaster over there!  If achieved that would be another new years resolution succeeded.

After that I dunno what will take my fancy, I’m half tempted to do a bunch of ethereal stuff to summon into an undead legion army and a vamp or two to take with the list.  That is probably pretty quick and easy to do too with the airbrush so not a massive challenge.

The probably back to my Malifaux ‘to do’ box just to try and tick off that new years resolution.

I’m not really feeling the desire to start work on my Empire army with all the changes going on in WFB so I’ll possibly shelve that resolution.  Really it’s just the basing that is putting me off as if all humans & dwarfs are combined then I’ll do them to match my Brets and rebase my dwarfs.  I could do some of the WoC stuff as that would help give me a better selection of models to field that army as currently it’s very limited.

Hobby resolutions 2015 Q1 Update:

Finish epic Eldar 3000pts list – Done Q1

Base Brets – Done Q1

Paint 50pts Relic Knights – Done Q1

Paint all Malifaux figs (2 ish crew boxes plus a few) – Minimal Progress

Assemble guild ball teams, paint 1 team – now received Q2 target

Finish WoC (3 chariots, 4 skullcrushers, disclord and hell cannon) - Untouched

Finish empire (10 Demis, mounted wizbang) – Tempted to can this one due to the way WFB is up in the air at the moment.  Edition change usually means new models needed for existing armies instead.

Guild Ball is coming!

What is Guild ball?

Per their site:
Guild Ball: Tabletop Fantasy Medieval Football Game
minutes to learn - incredibly deep gameplay - modern-design game mechanics - fully realised world - amazing miniatures.

So medieval football was actually entire villages of people pushing against each other, this is a bit more stripped down, 6 players per team and two goals rather than the aim being to get the 'ball' to the other villages church!  But broadly the theme works.  Also it features guilds to represent the teams rather than a village so it gives them a distinct theme to each team.

'is it just another bloodbowl rip off?'
In short my answer would be no, in practice this game appears to have more in common with the likes of Malifaux or Warmachine than Bloodbowl other than the fact it terms itself a football game.  It plays on a 3x3' board, the movement is freeform rather than a grid and the objective of the game is to score more points than your opponent (points are scored by goals and by what is effectively killing people).

Fishermen Guild

Why should I be interested?
The game is completely free, ok you'll want 6 model but they give you the rules, all the player stats and everything you need to play free to download off their website.  Personally I think the models they are producing for the game look incredibly cool so I'll be using them, but you could use any old 6 models (preferably not all identical!) and be able to play.
Rules & player cards are linked here:
http://guildball.com/#downloads

Yeah but so what?
Um ok, you're right being free isn't enough these days in a competitive gaming market.  The game designers are Warmachine players of some repute (and also great painters which feeds into the figure design) these guys have tried to design a complex and engaging game system but one which has at its heart very simple rules and mechanics.  In short it looks like a really fun game with a good tactical depth to it.  Personally I love small scale tactical games as they let me not need to paint countless hordes of models but have a fun evenings gaming with a high replay value.

So why are you pushing this?
Obviously I have an agenda here.  I bought into their Kickstarter and I would really like to have a bunch of opponents to play against.  I think there are a few of us locally who all took part and picked up some teams, but more players is what makes a game system really fun to play as everyone has their own take on the gameplay and it also just makes it a better chance of getting regular games!

Fishermen Sculpts

What's the games future?
Always a worry with Kickstarter games, but I think this should have some legs.  The developers have released the teams for 'season 1' and plan to develop more teams and story/plot developments which will feed into future seasons and there is evidence of this work already out there.  Plus they have committed to a delivery vehicle in order to get product out there through a partnership with Element Games so it feels like they've geared up for this to be a long term project not just a one time splash.

You mentioned Plot/Story?
That's right, this isn't just a set of mechanics.  A lot of time has been put into setting up an entire backstory/world in which the game is set.  It's not something utterly revolutionary that will blow your socks off but if you think a combination of the guilds from the Discworld novels combined with something like the aesthetic of the medieval Assassins Creed video game you'll not be far off.  Personally I'm a massive fan of the Renaissance period of history and this fits quite nicely into that feel.  The power struggle between the guilds is akin to the main Renaissance families of Italy as they vie for overall power/control of the world, but the battlefield is played out on the field of a Guild Ball game.

Butchers Guild

How does player development work?
This question is one which usually comes from other sportsball gamers.  In short it doesn't.  The designers have got round the issue of imbalance that comes into sports games by simply not having team development in the game. Instead they will control this through the changes made to teams in line with the wider story as each season progresses, so overall game balance can be maintained.  But the players all start with a good number of special abilities and different attacks which gives the game the real depth of how they interact, so it's not that you'll just have the equivalent of 6 linemen, 2 catchers, 2 blitzers and a passer with the handful of skills that entails in Bloodbowl (I'll restate I don't really think comparing to Bloodbowl is actually relevant, think more like the stat cards of other modern skirmish games).

But doesn't that mean my Season 1 players get invalidated?
In short no, you can continue to play your season 1 team players for as long as you like.  I believe you'll be able to mix and match players from different seasons once they're released, the only restriction being you cant take the season 1 and season 2 versions of the same player in the same team.  So you won't suddenly lose a player just because the story has moved on, you can keep your favourite version of player x in all your teams.

Ok I'm sold where do I sign up?
At present (Mar 2015) the Kickstarter is due to deliver this month and after it has shipped the models will become available for general release.  The designers aren't really wanting to be retailers so in addition to the deal with Element Games they are also ensuring many game stores are dedicated stockists.  Currently the closest (to Bristol) I'm aware of is Firestorm Games, but if it catches on I'd expect to see its models in all good gaming stores near you.  But remember the rules & cards are completely free to download (link above) so if you don't like the models they are making you can still play without giving them a penny.

So really, why are you pushing this?
Ok we asked this already and you fobbed us off with an answer of 'you want some opponents to play', really what's the answer?  Well it is exactly that, but the driver would be that I backed the Kickstarter to the tune of 5 teams.  I've put my money down on this one as I genuinely think it looks like a great game to play and I'd love to see it succeed so that I can use the cool models I've bought.  For anyone that hasn't checked them out yet go have a look at the Guild ball website and other various social media outlets which host photos, I think these are some of the best looking models for games around.

March Paint Queue

So in the last 2 weeks I've played 2 1 day tournaments (one Malifaux, one WFB) and this has me hugely jazzed for doing hobby stuff.  To that end I've been cracking on with painting, there are a few things on the list that I need to do for upcoming tournaments (WFB) but the rest of it is just cool figures I've pulled out my box that I really want to paint.

WFB

10 Bret Peasant Bowmen – 10 Painted
10 Mounted Yeoman
HE Noble on eagle

Malifaux

1 Outcast Johan
2 Outcast Hollow Waifs

Relic Knights

3 Doctorine Acedemy Guard – 1 Painted
1 Doctorine Delphine & Ekis
1 Doctorine Librarian
1 Doctorine Fiametta

So the Malifaux stuff is just continuing to work towards my goal of getting all the models I own painted up, these particularly would get me a complete levi crew once the waifs are done and then Johan who is an all round useful model apparently.

Relic Knights has been sat in a bag for a while and falls squarely into the realms of 'it looks cool' so I want to paint it and I made a 50pts force part of my NY resolutions (along with painting all the Malifaux stuff).  There are a couple of guys down the club who also backed the kickstarter so I'm trying to line up a game at some point too.

Feb Painting

Herald on palanquin & 3 bases of Nurglings

Blue scribes

Karadrian

Griffon

Hunters

So after a frantic January Feb has been rather slow, what I have painted has all been additions to armies/crews for using at events, though I wont be using the daemons myself.

But actually I've also been busy ticking off my New Years resolution of getting the basing and movement trays done on my Bretonnians.  That project got finished off this month but I'm adding a new unit to the army and will do a grand reveal once it is finished.

Gertfaux

A mere 2 years after my last malifaux tournament it looks like I'll be attending another one.

The event is Gertfaux in Bristol, helpfully being held 10 mins from where I live.  I'm actually in as the spare player but due to drop outs I'm currently playing.  Rules for this particular event is single master and 100ss pool, being sensible I should probably only write a single list and stick with it, but I'm being ambitious and I'm submitting a pool.  That said schemes and strats are pre-announced so I should really go in with a good idea of what I'm going to do and pick the crew to match.

Here is the pool I've put together, not because any of it is particularly synergistic but mostly because it's what I have painted and lets me run a bunch of stuff at different point costs and see what it all does!  I'm going to try and read the strats & schemes tonight and try to design cres for each of them, which might result in me chaning some of the pool if there are things which are entirely useless in there.

The draw has gone up and I seem to be playing another player not on the UK rankings, so seems it will be a total 'noob' off to start the day, lets see if we can 'noobstomp' each other out of existance, or more likely only get 3 turn in as we look up the rules for everything!

Now all I've got to do is hope that nobody else drops out and I become surplus to requirements again!

Organising my collection – Downsizing/offloading junk!

So unusually it’s not actually a new years resolution to offload my junk, yet I’m looking at it in a serious way.  Oddly this all seems to have been spurred on by the possible changes to Warhammer forecast for 9th edition.

For those that don’t follow the game the rumours suggest there will be drastic changes to how the game looks and plays in the next edition which is rumoured for the middle of 2015.  From 16 factions down to 6 (and there is already track record for this from the End Times books coming out at present).   So why should that really impact my collection?  Well it has been a long term goal to own one of every army for Warhammer.  But if the armies are no longer in existence do I really want to own them?  If they’re combined then what overlap do I have in my figure collection, what could I sell off vs keep without impacting me?

All of that got me thinking about the mountain of figures in my cupboards and how seldom some of them see the light of day.  For instance I have a 40k space marine army that hasn’tcome out the box in over 3 years I suspect.  It’s a battle company too, so not a small collection!  Then what about all the old games which I have stacks of figures for, will I end up playing them ever?

So I’ve begun the process of firstly carrying out an audit of what I own and the next step will be deciding what to do with it.

Warhammer – My biggest commitment, and the one with least certainty going forward.

Bretonnians – Full 3,000ish pts army, all models painted except 6 mounted yeomen but still needs based but that means I can match it with my empire to roll it forwards (it’s one of my resolutions to base it) HOLD & PAINT. SUBJECT TO FUTURE SELL ARMY.

Chaos Dwarfs – Big hat metals army.  These guys are money.  I paid a pittance for them as bought off someone that won the army in a raffle!  But I think I’ll paint them up and not just sell them off, there is something about an army that has been discontinued on multiple occasions that says holding them will only see the value increase. HOLD & PAINT

Daemons of Chaos – Chaos Legion will be one of the armies to exist in future Warhammer so no risk attached to these.  Already future proofed with my consistent basing scheme between them and my WoC.  Have a small selection of unpainted bits but only a handful of models, so should get them painted up so I can call it done.  Organised these recently into one place so can actually review what I have. HOLD

Dark Elves – Have a box full of stuff in my ‘to paint’ queue.  This is a tricky one, with the combination of the elf armies into one they are entirely redundant as I have painted WE and HE but on inconsistent basing.  Assuming 9th makes them one army then anything in here must become duplicate with stuff in the other two books surely.  Consider selling? PAINT/SELL

Dwarfs – Massive army and a box of spares which are unpainted.  Unload surplus stuff barring things that are genuinely useful, sounds like army will cease to exist as a standalone but given a lot of what I have is 3rd ed metals it’s holding value and desirable. HOLD & PAINT,  SELL UNWANTED figs

Empire – Bound to exist going forward in some form.  I’ve most of an army painted and plenty to expand with, these are the next army painting project, not too much additional unnecessary stuff to offload really. HOLD & PAINT

High Elves – Army done in 2014, still adding bits.  Have a box full of stuff I should just sell as of little value to me, but keep pulling bits from it to use at present, so loath to flog it quite yet.  Again the combination of the elf armies gives me some concerns over what to do with this stuff. HOLD, SELL UNWANTED, POSSIBLY SELL ARMY?

Lizardmen – Could be written out Warhammer based on some current thinking, personally doubt it but who knows!  I have a box of unpainted stuff but not masses so another one which I should just finish everything off and offload what is left. PAINT O/S, SUBJECT TO FUTURE SELL ARMY.

Orcs & Goblins – Army painted but very limited options.  Really should paint some more bits but also have a load of crap I should ditch. A staple of the GW universe, can’t see them going anywhere. HOLD, SELL UNWANTED

Skaven – already unloaded most of the unnecessary stuff, so just things I want to paint at some point left, army looks safe to exist going forward HOLD & PAINT

Tomb Kings – Got fully painted then bought a few more bits.  Get it all painted again! Becomes part of undead legion army, assume will exist going forward. HOLD & PAINT

Warriors of Chaos – will combine in UL, keep and paint what I have, some surplus stuff to unload. HOLD & PAINT

Wood Elves – Again elf legion problem, but have an attractive army that I like, so should be a definite keeper.  Have a box full of extras but a lot of it could find its way into an army, so think this is paint rather than sell, but a lot of it is metals which are replaced by new plastics.  Should I trade out? HOLD & PAINT

VC, OK, Beasts – These are the armies I don’t own at present. NOT AS STANDALONE ARMIES, ROLL INTO UL AND LOC, rumours suggest that beastmen are done for but hard to believe.  OK… combined with O&G, so an easy option to add them to what I have there.

Malifaux - Played 2 games of M2e which is now over 2 years old... Suggests I shouldn't really be too attached to it, but I've really enjoyed painting the figures so not about to sell it off, plus it's not exactly a huge model count I have.

Relic Knights - This is just a cool model range.  Again not a huge collection so I'm going to commit to painting up a force and stick with it for now.

Warmachine - This is probably the game I'm least attached to.  Played a few games a few years ago and it was ok, but since it's just sat in a box untouched.  I recently went and painted a few figs which I've rather enjoyed so might paint up the army but imagine just to increase its sale value.

Rivet Wars - never played, some of it still on sprue.  Basically on hold due to current life (small kids).  This looks like fun to pull out for a gaming afternoon when I get back to doing those.

Sedition Wars - Dead on arrival, get rid is the sensible thing, but at the same time I quite like the idea of the game and should paint it up for fun at some stage.

Necromunda - Did a good job of downsizing the collection last year, should continue to ditch this as it's just a waste of space.  Will keep 1 gang for sentimental reasons.

40k - Space marines should get offloaded, they're just dead space.  Eldar is a painting project that I want to get back to at some point, so keep those.

Infinity - Again no desire to play the game ever, should just shift it on.

Epic - I sat on stuff in a box for donkeys years and last year painted up a force, still never played the game but have a cool army ready to go when I get round to it, as had such fun doing it have actually picked up a bunch more stuff too.  Being sensible have a load of stuff I should get rid of, but enjoy painting it so gonna keep it and hardly takes up much room!

Overall I've basically got a load of stuff I should sell. But in reality I've so little reason to sell it I can't see myself offloading any.  Instead I'll just focus on painting the things I want and keep the rest hidden away in boxes!

HE painting updates

As ever an upcoming event has spurred me into action and I'm working on some stuff I can't currently field in my list.

The rather unloved griffon is getting to show his face, but not the usual IoB version. This is a reaper bones model:

And I've also done a rider, he might actually end up on a Phoenix as I think the bsb will get the griffon but still useful!

All of this being work towards a silly HE army which I'll run at a local 1 day event.  I think with that model I have everything I need for the list so can go back to painting stuff 'because I want to' rather than any need.
